‘The Next Layer’
Each painting evolves through a process of building, obscuring, revealing and responding. Rather than working towards a fixed image, I allow each layer to suggest what comes next.
The Next Layer is not only about the physical layers within each painting. It also reflects the evolution of my practice. After thirty years working in ceramics, followed by a period exploring printmaking, these paintings represent the next layer of my artistic journey. Each body of work builds on what came before while opening the possibility of something new.
Working with texture, line and restrained colour, I am interested in allowing each element enough space to speak clearly. Rather than adding more, I am discovering what happens when each mark, surface and material is given room to breathe.
For me, the process is one of slowing down, listening, and trusting that each painting will reveal its own direction—one layer at a time.
